Gabrielle Truax - Spot News



Around 3:45am on Sunday, April 10, near the area of 9 Mile Road and Vinton Avenue, in Alpine Township between Grand Rapids and Sparta, 5 teens got into a fatal, single-car accident in which they hit a tree. High speed was a factor, and authorities also believe there was drug and possibly alcohol use involved, although the driver, 17-year-old Armando Mendoza of Alpine Township, was thought to be sober. One teen, 16-year-old Kaitlin Keeler of Alpine Township, was thrown from the vehicle, the other four, 16-year-old Alyssa Naughton of Walker, 16-year-old Alyssa Eggerding of Alpine Township, 17-year-old Olivia Lawrence of Sparta Township, and Armando Mendoza, were all pinned in and had to be extricated from the car. Mendoza and Naughton were both airlifted to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. The others were taken to Butterworth by ambulance. All suffered serious injuries, but Alyssa Eggerding died on Monday, April 11th of her injuries.
