Madison Herrema // Photo Essay

Morgan's Hair Salon
My sister, Morgan Herrema, went to school to become a Cosmetologist, as soon as she graduated high school. Our mother is a Cosmetologist, so Morgan shadowed her for a year during her senior year of high school. She always wanted to cut, color, and style hair when she was a little girl. Morgan got a small scholarship to go to Aveda, in downtown Grand Rapids. She went to school there for about a year and then applied to get a job at Engedi Salon, downtown Holland. She got the job there very fast. At Engedi, the owner taught Morgan how to please the customers so they can get the best treatment for their money. They incorporate head massages into their head washes and hand and food massages when customers get manicures and pedicures. At Engedi, Morgan goes by Liz because there was a Morgan who works there before Morgan got the job. So she goes by Liz, short for Elizabeth, her middle name.
Morgan treats friends and family members at her salon, at her house. Morgan's father made his extra storage room her salon when she graduated from high school. She has been using this salon for extra money for three and a half years. Her clients are never upset with her work. This is because Morgan is up to date with styles and always surfing Pinterest for new inspiration. She is always learning new techniques and up to date styles. This salon is her happy place and she spends most of her time here. Ember, her cat, likes to spend time in this room also and greet her clients. If her clients love cats, she can sense it and she will usually lay on their lap and purr. Morgan's sisters will usually come in and chat with clients while they are waiting for their cut or if they are accompanying the client getting their hair done. There's never a dull moment in this room.
